Following the trails of the history of literature in general and of philosophy in particular, Kelley (history, Rutgers U.) points out landmarks and patterns in the practice and theory primarily of intellectual history and secondarily of cultural history. He traces eclecticism from its Greek roots to the establishment of the history of philosophy as a respectable discipline in the 19th century, then surveys a number of practitioners since then.
