托妮·莫里森是美国文学史上惟一一位宋获诺贝尔文学奖的黑人女作家。她的作品享誉世界，在美国更是家喻户晓。莫里森从1970年发表处女作《最蓝的眼睛》到1998年出版《天堂》，在短短的28年间共有7剖长篇小说问世，每部都紧密围绕着黑人女性的内心世界和历史命运来展开故事情节，时而凄婉，时而悲壮，共同构成了史诗般荡气回肠的篇章。这些作品不仅其故事读者爱不释手，而且在主题思想的拓展和在写作手法的创新等方面也有不少独特之处，让很多评论家和同辈作家交口称赞。
本书在撰写过程中借鉴了女性主义以及后殖民主义文化研究的一些理论，但在论述上还是以莫里森的著述为基础，力图通过详细的文本分析，阐述莫里森赋予黑人母爱的特殊含义以及通过重构黑人女性的历史和文化来抵制主流文化的霸权和种族内部的性别和阶级压迫。本书在论述时，大体按照莫里森作品的先后顺序来按排章节，主要原因是笔者认为莫里森的母爱主题在七部作品中的发展脉络较为清晰，前期作品重在“失落”带来的“伤痛”，后期作品中“伤痛”依然存在，但重在“弥合”。“泛母爱”思想在最后两部作品中表现得尤为突出，这表明她对黑人文化和女性命运的思考也越来越深入。
