随着全球化进程的加快,双语现象越来越普及,会说两种语言的人也越来越多。从严格意义上讲,能够说两种语言,并且两种语言都达到较高水平的人才叫双语者。但从一般意义上说,能说两种语言的人都是双语者。从更广泛的意义上说,能说标准语和一门方言的人也可以叫双语者。比如能说汉语普通话和某种方言的人也可以作为双语者纳入到双语研究的范畴。双语已经成为许多学科的研究对象,《双语认知的心理语言学研究》更是将双语认知作为唯一的研究对象。
《双语认知的心理语言学研究》在前言中就开宗明义地告诉读者,它是从认知的角度来研究双语的。何谓认知?所谓认知,从心理学的角度讲,就是环境和人的大脑的交互过程。换句话说,就是环境作用于人,人又同时作用于环境。认知论是和行为主义的刺激反应论相对立的一种理论体系。它尤其反对刺激反应论中否定人也可以作用于环境的理论。那么人和环境如何互动呢?不同的认知流派有不同的答案。信息处理模型认为语言的加工过程和其他的认知过程,比如骑自行车,没什么两样(Carroll,2000:61)。这和chomsky学派的语言模块论不同。Chomsky学派也认为他们的学说是认知学派的一部分,但他们认为语言是独立于一般认知原则之外的独特的认知体系。目前,一些新的认知学派,比如PDP模型,试图用神经元的连接代替信息转换来解释语言的认知加工过程等等。不同的认知理论都在《双语认知的心理语言学研究》中得到体现。
