简介
In the first section of the book's two sections, Gates treats the problem of "signifyin(g)" from both the theoretical and the historical perspective. Offering a genealogy of black ways of speaking and (by consequence) black ways of writing, Gates defines a distinctive African-American formal literary practice. The elaborate improvisation practice forms the basis for Gates' theory of literature and literary criticism. In the second section, Gates documents this theory with an exploration of "the trape of the talking book," predominantly in the fiction of Zora Neal Hurston, Ismael Reed, and Alice Walker.
