Following the illustrations and captions of the works shown are four essays (John Gage, "Rothko: color as subject"; Barbara Novak and Brian O’Doherty, "Rothko’s dark paintings: tragedy and void"; Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, "Material and immaterial surface: the paintings of Rothko"; Jeffrey Weiss, "Rothko’s unknown space"), a chronology assembled by Jessica Stewart, and interviews (conducted by Mark Rosenthal and Weiss with Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, Gerhard Richter, Robert Ryman, and George Segal).
