Publisher Summary 1
This collection of essays on francophone Maghrebian literature demonstrates that francophone writing of North Africa remains vibrant. Essays examine themes common to anticolonial and postcolonial periods, such as identity, conflicts between tradition and modernity, women's place in society, and the lives of North African immigrants living in France. They illustrate the ambiguous relationship between the Maghrebian writer and the French language, and point to the ongoing political nature of North African literature. Mortimer teaches French at the University of Colorado. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
