Provides essential biographical information, dated lists of the compositions, and bibliographic source data for more than 2000 Soviet composers. The entry for Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky--typical of the longer entries (his name is here spelled Pytor Il'ich Chaikovsky)--runs to four pages. Relatively obscure composers (many of them contemporary) merit just a few lines. Also listed are composers (for example: Irving Berlin, Dmitri Tiomkin) not generally considered to be "Russian", and persons (for example: Jascha Heifetz, Vladimir Horowitz, Boris Pasternak) not generally considered to be "composers". Valuable as a reference, but also a lot of fun to aimlessly explore. Nicely produced; should enjoy long shelf-life in musical reference libraries.
