简介
半世纪前，霍恩比编纂牛津高明阶词典，开创了英语教学词典的先河；后经不断修订再版，该词典更臻完善。本词典就是牛津高阶词典的忠实译本，以英英、英汉双解形式出版，其权威性已为世所公认。此增补本乃第四版增添《新词补编》而成，内容更丰富实用，切合时宜。内容比第三版增加60%以上增辟《新词补编》，精选新词的约3000个，并附国际音标和240项说明新词来源或用法的附注共收词及组60000条，有6500新条目，示例共83100项，绝大部分都是新增加的习语和短语动词共12800项，均设有互相参照条目。新设立200项专题处理的语法或困难词语用法说明，全新插图共1820项，均有译文对照
增添大量副词示例，更为实用；形容词区分为作定语或作表语的两种用法，重新编排简明的动词模式表，列于书末；增添两种使用本词典的说明：书前的简要实用说明和书后的详细说明。译文符合汉语规范，英英、英汉双解并重。
