中华民族的伟大复兴是21世纪中国的战略目标。改革开放20多年来，中国经济迅速发展，经济总体规模不断扩大，为国家综合实力的提高确立了最重要的基础。中共十六大提出建设全面小康社会的目标之后，国内外不少人都表示赞同，认为我们有很好的条件，能够实现这一目标，中国亿万人的强国梦在不远的将来即将实现。但全面小康目标要求2020年GDP再翻两番，年均增长率达到7.2％，从改革开放以来合计，40年平均的年复合增长率为8％左右。
从国际经验看，持续增长40年并不容易。1960～2000年40年间，经济年平均增长率超过5％的6个大中型经济体（韩国、泰国、马来西亚、日本、土耳其和印度尼西亚）在经济持续增长20年后速度放缓的一个重要原因，是这些国家金融体系发展不够强健。亚洲金融危机就是这一问题的集中体现。中国经济要继续保持高速增长，完善金融体系也是迫在眉睫的事情。
当今世界各国综合国力的竞争更多的时候取决于一国的经济实力，而金融是现代经济的核心，离开了金融，经济就无法运转。金融业的强大与一个国家的强大是正相关的关系。目前，金融体系可以分为两种：银行主导型金融体系与市场主导型金融体系。两种都能引导储蓄向投资转化，通过资金的供给达到促进经济增长的目的，但它们又有明显的不同。美国、英国的金融体系是市场主导型金融体系的代表，而德国、日本和法国的金融体系则是银行主导型金融体系的代表。这几个国家都是当今世界强国。长期以来，中国的金融体系以银行间接融资为基本特色。20世纪80年代以来，世界金融体系也在调整和变革，其中，最为明显的迹象是作为银行主导型金融模式典型的众多欧洲大陆国家，正在向市场主导型金融体系演变。另外，人们注意到，曾有研究认为，后起的国家实行银行主导型金融体系更有利于提升综合国力，实现赶超战略。中国要建设经济强国，需要完善金融体系。是继续大力发展银行主导型金融体系，还是跟随世界潮流，努力建设市场主导型金融体系，大力发展资本市场？这为人们提出了一个重要的课题。
笔者认为，应该通过大力发展资本市场的途径，达到建设经济强国的目的。
本书共分四个部分。
导论为第一部分，主要为问题的提出、章节安排和本书的理论贡献。
第二部分为理论准备部分，包括第一章和第二章。
第一章 世界范围内金融体系的变化趋势与综合国力竞争
提出我们必须大力发展资本市场，逐步向市场主导型金融体系过渡。这是中国建设经济强国的战略重点。
第二章 资本市场与经济强国关系理论
为文献综述章，研究资本市场与经济强国的关系，以便为我们下一步的研究奠定理论基础。
第三章至第七章，构成了本书的第三部分，这一部分从资本市场的各个方面论述与经济强国建设的关系。
第三章 机构投资者的崛起及其与经济增长的关系
第四章 资本市场、企业制度与企业竞争力
第五章 资本市场中介服务机构的发展与经济增长机制的强化
第六章 资本市场与科技创新

第四部分即第八章。
第八章 发展中国的资本市场，建设经济强国的战略重点
为全文的理论应用章。任务是运用前文所提出的理论结合中国的实际问题进行分析、解答。在这一章中笔者提出了发展资本市场，建设经济强国的战略重点。
