In 1516, three abbesses and a prioress of the diocese of Winchester asked Fox, their bishop, to translate into English the Latin Benedictine Rule, originally written about 640 for St. Benedict's monks. He put the words into female form and shaped the work to be readily applicable to the nuns. Collett (history, U. of Melbourne) presents the text and introduces it with chapters on English society, monastic life, making the translation, and the early modern Englishwoman.
