Kreyling (English, Vanderbilt) sees history and memory as the surface of a Moebius strip, each twisting into the other. Using Pierre Nora's essay "Between Memory and History: Les Lieux de Memoire" (1989) as a launching point, and portrayals of the south in many 20th century American literary texts as a subject matter, Kreyling explores the history/memory continuum, in particular, the points where history and memory meld and conflict around images of slavery and racism, pre-civil war life, and the southern warrior. Kreyling explores works by many different writers, arguing that as time goes on, the imaginary, mythical south grows ever more deeply intertwined with the real.
