简介
从严格的意义上来说，美国文学的历史距今不过二百来年，和欧洲任何一个国家的文学史相比，它是历时最短而发展最快的。它不仅是美国这个多元民族的发展史的一个缩影，而且它对美国的民族意识和民族文化的形成作出了突出的贡献。从世界文学的范围来看，美国文学是一支异军突起的新生力量，在近一百多年的历史中，它对世界文学已经产生了一定的影响。坡的诗沦和诗作成了法国象征主义诗歌的源头，惠特曼的诗风对我国二十世纪初期新诗运动产生过明显的影响，这都是大家所熟悉的事实。我们如果对于美国文学的萌芽、生长、成热这样一个过程具有一个即令是浮光掠影的感性认识，也会增进我们对美国的风土人情和美国社会的文化背景的了解。同时，直接接触美国文学作品也会使我们对所谓“美国精神”能有更进一步的认识和理解。
