This work for students and practitioners offers an overview of key issues in the field from a UK perspective. Early chapters outline the policy agenda for early childhood services, and discuss issues related to inspecting and evaluating the quality of early years and childcare provision. Later chapters discuss the early years curriculum, tools of assessment, the role of health in early years services, and meeting special needs. A final section looks at training and workforce issues. Chapter discussion questions are included. This fifth edition is revised to emphasize the role of multi-agency teams in responding to the needs of children and families, and has been rewritten with the new Early Years Foundation Stage and the Early Years Professional Status requirements in mind. Pugh is chair of the National Children's Bureau and visiting professor at the Institute of Education. Duffy is head of the Thomas Coram Children's Center.
