Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Kalu (black studies, U. of Northern Colorado) presents an anthology of literature by African writers, including myths and legends, early autobiographies written by African slaves, and works by well-known and new writers such as Amos Tutuola, Peter Abrahams, Camara Laye, James Ene Henshaw, Chinua Achebe, Miriama Ba, Bessie Head, Tayeb Salih, and Wole Soyinka. It is organized chronologically and then by region, beginning with the oral tradition and slave trade up to the present. She attempts to present main ideas and genres in African literature, and focuses only on works written in English or that have been translated.
