Publisher Summary 1
Formerly linked with the goddess Fortune, the symbol of the wheel became associated with science and linear progress during the Victorian Era. In this study, Campbell examines several novels by Charles Dickens written between 1840 and 1860, showing how these works fused the feminine imagery of the classical wheel of fortune to the masculine symbol of the industrial wheel of progress. Campbell teaches English at Oregon State University. Annotation 漏2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
