College London, UK) provisionally define therapeutic microbiology as "the use of microbes, or compounds other than antimicrobial agents, to confer some benefit on an animal by altering its indigenous microbiota, immunity, or physiology or else by eliminating a particular pathogen;" a definition that encompasses probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, bacteriophages, and replacement therapy. They present 29 chapters exploring this field, organized into sections dealing with the biological principles underlying the manipulation of the indigenous microbiota; the biology of the effector organisms that have been utilized for this purpose; and the use of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, bacteriophages, and replacement therapy for the prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as for conferring other benefits on humans and animals.
