简介
《卡斯特桥市长》是英国著名小说家、诗人哈代的重要代表作之一。
故事讲述主人公亨查德通过自己的努力，从一个无名小子成为受人尊敬的
市长，又因性格的弱点而受到命运的捉弄，最终在贫困孤独中凄惨地死去
的悲情故事。亨查德年轻时是个地位卑微的工人，他为人正直、善良。一
次醉酒后，他把妻子和女儿卖给了别人。事后他追悔莫及，从此滴酒不沾
。后来，凭着自己的勤奋和努力，他生意亨通，还当上了受人尊敬的卡斯
特桥市长。后来妻女回到了他的身边，但由于性格中的刚愎、偏执，灾难
也接踵而至。他先是与合伙人唐纳德闹翻，在竞争中陷于破产，并失去了
市长的公职。妻子去世后，他又痛苦地发现女儿并非自己亲生。就在他打
算与女友结婚的时候，不想女友与生意上的竞争对手唐纳德相爱并嫁给了
唐纳德。破产和羞辱使他陷入狼狈的境地，而且他有伤风化的卖妻行为也
流传开来，这一切使他无地自容，于是他黯然离开了卡斯特桥市，在孤独
中悲惨地离开了人世。
该书自出版以来，一直受到世界各地一代又一代读者的欢迎，被翻译
成十几种文字，还被改编成电影、电视剧。无论作为语言学习的课本，还
是作为通俗的文学读本，本书对当代中国读者都将产生积极的影响。为了
