简介

Water is life, but as human lives grow in number and expectations, the amount of water that can sustain them shrinks. Gleick (Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security) examines this situation from the overall intentions of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on down to the bottle of water on supermarket shelves, concentrating on the situation in California. He and his contributors find inadequate commitment to the MDGs, resulting in diseases and death, confusing regulations about bottle water and tap water that may make tap water actually safer, privatization efforts that may or may not provide clean water, groundwater that exists in various jurisdictions under various conditions, and efforts to conserve residential and commercial water supplies. They close with information on changes in climate and how they should be considered in water policy. They include brief papers on the third World Water Forum, the human right to water, references linking water and climate, and security. They also include an extensive data section giving information on freshwater worldwide. Annotation 漏2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
