Like others in the publishers "Companions to American History" series, this volume tackles a subject by soliciting contributions from scholars with a broad spectrum of interests and points of view, creating a stimulating compendium. Leading off the 35 essays are two chapters surveying FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt biographies. Following are chapters devoted to FDR's pre-presidential career and physical and psychological health. Subsequent coverage includes the elections and campaigns, urban and regional interests, and FDR in relation to minorities, labor, business, conservation, human rights, the Supreme Court, Congress, science and technology, and other countries, among other topics.
