Covering both theory and application, this work presents an overview of organizational change. Early chapters cover open-system and chaos theories, consideration of the work of Fritjof Capra and Ilya Prigogine, and Malcom Gladwell's theories regarding major changes arising when systems reach the "tipping point." Later chapters cover actual implementation, although theory is regularly mixed in. Burke (psychology and education, Teachers College, Columbia U.) states in the introduction that "The bulk of what was written for the first and second editions of this book remains the same in this third edition." This is perhaps too modest, as there is a new fourteen page chapter on organizational culture change, new sections on positive organization change and loosely coupled systems, and an additional case study.
