He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1910 under Franz Boas on the Coosan language of Oregon. Other languages he worked on included Chimakuan, Shasta and Penutian. Like Boas and his contemporary Edward Sapir, he was Jewish. He seems to have worked for the Bureau of Ethnology.
