A study of the role of the city of Thebes in Books 2 and 3of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Micaela Janan uses the psychoanalytic theory of Freud and Lacan to argue that thestrangely fantastical way in which Thebes is presented shows Ovid posing questions that ultimately relate to the concept of collective identity.
