简介
Jerry Goldkorn is the rabbi of Lud, an uninspiring town in New Jersey where the chief business is running cemetries. But there is not enough of a congregation in Lud to keep him busy. What happens to Jerry because of this time on his hands constitutes this novel. In the novel's first half he is mainly sounding off in what aspires to be an entertaining line of talk, and delivers eulogies for people he never knew. Jerry also talks of the time 10 years back when he departed for a year to be chief rabbi of the Alaska Pipeline, caring for Jewish construction workers in Anchorage. Other characters include Jerry's employers, funeral directors, his wife and his daughter Connie, who yearns to leave Lud. ISBN 0-684-18902-X :
