For use as a supplement in American history survey courses, this volume (the first in a two-volume set) brings together biographical essays on figures such as John Smith, Daniel Boone, Tecumseh, Andrew Jackson, Nat Turner, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and William T. Sherman. Weisner (history, Springfield Technical Community College) and Hartford, a writer and project editor, present in 19 chapters, profiles of individuals that show how they influenced and were influenced by historical events. Articles were selected based on their readability and interest, and are preceded by contextual introductions to sections, which are organized chronologically. Primary documents and introductory notes are included. Changes to this edition include replacing the articles on Benjamin Franklin and Phyllis Wheatley with more current pieces on them.
