Light in August portrays Faulkner's religious vision of the hopeful stubbornness of ordinary life. The guileless Lena Grove, in search of her unborn child's father; the disgraced minister Gail Hightower; and Joe Christmas, consumed by his mixed ancestry; find their lives entangled in love, birth and death.
