Ogren (Jewish thought and mysticism, Hebrew U.) takes the concept of metempsychosis, mainly within its Jewish contexts, as an axis around which to study and analyze developments in Renaissance intellectual history. The idea that souls move from body to body can serve as an example, he says, of how concepts shared by kabbalists and humanists be used to gauge and analyze intellectual interaction and reaction, of mutual influence, and of particular developments in thought. He explores the notion the writers Candia, Isaac Abarbanel, Judah Hayyat, Elia Hayyin ben Binyamin of Genzzano, Yohanan Alemanno, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and Marsilio Ficino. Quotations are translated in the text, with the originals footnoted. The study is based on his 2008 Ph.D. dissertation at Hebrew University.
