In this textbook, Albanese (U. of California at Santa Barbara) tells the multifaceted story of religion in the United States, downplaying concerns she sees as more important to leaders than religious communities as a whole, such as governance and politics, although these issues are not entirely neglected. She begins with chapters on religious experiences that were part of the original fabric of the US, including Native American traditions, Judaism, Roman Catholicism, liberal and missionary Protestantism, and African American religious traditions. Focus than switches to religions originating in North America, such as Mormonism, Christian Science, Seventh-day Adventism, and various strands of Western metaphysical traditions; the experience and influence of Eastern traditions such as Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism; and the "pluralist" and "post-pluralist" phenomena of New-Ageism and Fundamentalism, respectively.
