简介
学过项语的人都知道，英语中最难掌握的不是语法，也不是词汇，而是习惯用法。有时一句话在语法上没有总是逻辑上讲得通，意思上也清楚，但却被认为是错句，究其原因是不符合习惯用法。对此，英语惯用法专家A.S.Hornby曾告诫人们：“想学会讲英语或写英语的人常关心所谡语地上是否正确的问题，其实他也应该关心所讲所写的是否通顺和合乎习惯，……”
判断一个句子正确与否，语法、逻辑等方面的因素固然重要，但更重要的是它必须符合习惯用法。
语言是交际的工具，是文化的载体，同时也是思维的工具。人类活动中的语言现象忠实地反映出它所服务的文化和社会。鉴于中西方文化背景和思维方式等诸方面存在着很大差异中国人在学习英语时，常常会说出或写出一些使美人莫名其妙的句子，甚至造成误解。这些单靠记忆词汇和掌握语法规则是无法解决的。学习英语惯用法，可以使我们说一口或写一手标准、地道的英语，避免不自然的（生硬的）或“中国式”的英语，从而提高运用地道英语进行交际的能力。
《新时代英语惯用法词典》立足于一般读者，从实用性出发，重在解决实际问题。语言简明、扼要，运用典型例句、正误对比等物法，在有限的篇幅内，向读者提供尽可能多的信息。在编写过程中，广泛参阅了国内外一些惯用法研究成果，同时又特别注意到了英语惯用法的一些新变化，使这本词典尽量与时代合拍，如实地反映现代英语惯用法。对于某些有争议或尚未形成定论的问题，书中比较客观、公正地进行了说明，在措辞上用了“通常”、“一般”、“较少”等词语，相信读者自会明白其中的含义。
