This novel has for its theme the relation between sexuality and violence--specifically, in upper-middle-class suburbia--and is set in a small upstate New York town in the 1950s and '60s. The arresting plot centers on a young white woman, Iris Courtney, and her relationship with Jinx Fairchild, a young black man. Contrary to accepted practice in the town, Iris associates with blacks; and, one day, Jinx kills a white boy who was hassling Iris. She covers for her friend, and the case is never solved; subsequently, Iris and Jinx go their separate ways and begin their adult lives in far different manners: Iris, to college and career; Jinx, to early marriage and fatherhood and then into the army. Oates analyzes with wisdom and sensitivity the nature of their relationship, and how that bond echoed for years afterward. ISBN 0-525-34860-9:
