Confusion and fear of liability surrounding copyright issues have reached alarming levels at colleges and universities across the country. In recent years alone, a federal court has assailed photocopying of book chapters at Kinkos Copies, universities have faced infringement accusations when they make computer software available to students and faculty, and media facilities have struggled with the possible and seemingly unknowable limits on using copyrighted videotapes. In the first large-scale study of its kinds, Kenneth D. Crews offers an enlightening explanation of copyright and the notoriously ambiguous concept of fair use as they affect and are affected by higher education. Crewss survey of copyright policies at ninety-eight American research universities reveals the various ways universities have responded to and how they could better manage the conflicting goals of copyright policies: avoiding infringements while promoting lawful uses that serve teaching and research.
