This book contains 23 essays, including five original essays written for this volume, as well as Fitzgerald's letters relating to the novel. It is divided into four sections - The first section, "Overviews", includes Trilling's landmark evaluation and essays on the sources of the novel. The second section, "the Artist at Work", describes the novel's command of language, the artistry in the revisions Fitzgerald made, the intricate patterning and the linguistic concision. The third section, "Fresh Approaches", covers Fitzgerald's critique of capitalism in the novel, the appropriateness of Nick Carraway as narrator and a defense of the much-maligned Daisy Buchanan. The final section, "History-Myth-Meaning", combines perceptive readings of key scenes in the novel with historical and ethical perspectives and analyzes the meaning, themes and new implications of the novel.
