Explores the ways in which Emily Bront set about the composition of her poetry and novel and discusses the probable contents of her second novel. Provides insight into her mind and working methods, showing that she wrote from direct inspiration and then recast her work under the influence of rational planning. Makes use of new discoveries which show that she had made translation of Virgil and Horace, and examines anomalies and inconsistencies between the version of the novel first submission to a publisher and its final acceptance.
