简介
Exhibition and catalogue examining body language, or nonverbal expression, through a variety of works in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Catalogue is divided into five mains sections (on face, gesture, posture, pairs, and groups) in which each contributor presents two comparisons of pairs of artworks. Mary Chan studies faces through comparisons of Berenice Abbott’s Portrait of the artist and Henri Matisse’s White mask on black background, and Max Klinger’s Going under and Roy Lichtenstein’s Drowning girl. Starr Figura considers gesture through Max Beckmann’s Self-portrait with a cigarette and Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #113, and K the Kollwitz’s, Help Russia and Dorothea Lange’s, Just about to step into the bus for the assembly center, San Francisco. Sarah Ganz looks at posture through Henri Matisse’s Bather and Umberto Boccioni’s Unique forms of continuity in space, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s M. de Lauradour and Louise Dahl-Wolfe’s Nashville. Maria del Carmen González discusses pairs through édouard Vuillard’s Mother and sister of the artist and Seydou Ke ta’s Bamako, and Clarence White’s The mirror and Edvuard Munch’s The young model. M. Darsie Alexander presents groups through Ernest Ludwig Kirchner’s Street, Dresden and Edvuard Munch’s Death chamber, and Charles Ray’s Family romance and Tina Barney’s Untitled. Other related images follow each comparison.
